The Director, Fleet Safety, reporting to the SVP of Occupational & Food Safety, will support UNFI's companies coast to coast. The role exists to provide transportation safety and regulatory compliance expertise to reduce and control UNFI's exposure to transportation operational risk. This role is responsible for strategic management of the organizations fleet safety policies, program which includes leading best practice initiatives and continually improving processes to support the overall business strategy. In this position, the Director of Fleet Safety will design the audit process, oversee the team in maintaining Department of Transportation and UNFI Fleet Safety records, set and revise compliance standards according to Federal, State and local regulations, develop a consistent training program, develop and implement testing protocols and a process for tracking and following up on transportation risk. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Job Responsibilities

  • Create standardized transportation safety management systems, policies and procedures for compliance and risk prevention, meeting federal, state, county and local rules and regulations.
  • Create standardized transportation compliance reports and audit protocols to ensure compliance with federal, state, county and local regulations. Ensuring FMCSA registrations are maintained.
  • Design and implement effective metrics to track progress, proactively identify areas of concern and drive safety accountability -
  • Partner with stakeholders in supply chain, finance, IT, legal, occupational safety, corporate claims and HR) to identify and resolve gaps in DOT compliance, related training programs and safe practices and logs. -
  • Develop and implement policies relating to the acquisition, maintenance and disposal of fleet assets. -
  • Lead and develop the Fleet Safety Manager team
  • Performs other relevant job duties as required. JOB REQUIREMENTS: -Education/ Certifications/or Equivalent combination of education training and experience:
    • Bachelor's degree with major course work in occupational safety, risk management, safety/industrial engineering, or a closely related field is required.
    • The following are highly desirable: * -Certification specializing in US Department of Transportation regulations. FMCSA certified instructor. * Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Experience: -
      • Minimum of 10 years of Federal and State Department of Transportation (DOT) related experience with large national company with multiple sites. Strong knowledge of applicable OSHA and FMCA regulatory requirements.
      • Experience with vehicle video telematic solutions is highly preferred. Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities: --- Demonstrate leadership to evaluate risks and compliance situations from system, cultural and behaviors perspectives.
      • Ability to influence others to adopt changes/corrections, through motivational, factual and positive coaching
      • Demonstrate flexibility to effectively deal with changing priorities and timelines through analytical problem-solving
      • Proven time management and follow-through skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks with tight deadlines
      • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team-oriented environment
      • Display superior written, oral communication skills and effective listening skills
      • Highly motivated, with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative
      • Demonstrates strong work ethic and integrity, willing to do what it takes to get the job done right the first time
      • Ability to teach, mentor, and lead in various group settings
      • Ability to analyze complex problems, draw relevant conclusions and implement appropriate solutions

      • Ability to adapt to changing business needs PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/ DEMANDS: -
        • Must be able to travel to UNFI facilities (up to 35% of the time). -
        • 25% work is performed in a non-temperature-controlled environment (yard, onsite in a DC, etc.)
        • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
        • Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at desk or computer terminal
        • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
        • Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone and other office equipment in the course of normal workday
