Optum / UnitedHealth Group is committed to supporting the development of the Cell & Gene Therapy marketplace. - These therapies are characterized by the manipulation of genes to treat disease. Many of these therapies target patients with rare diseases and have the potential to cure and / or significantly improve their quality of life. By 2026, we estimate that there will be > 190 therapies on market in the U.S., representing > $30B in drug spend, $12-15B in supporting care costs, and billions more in indirect care costs associated with patient diagnosis and ongoing treatment. The scientific and clinical complexity, as well as unprecedented prices associated with gene therapies, are just a few of the challenges. To fully realize the promising clinical benefits, these therapies will require a transformed approach to care; patients, pharma manufacturers, care providers, health plans, and plan sponsors are going to be critical stakeholders in deploying these therapies to their fullest potential.
The VP, Cell & Gene Therapy Development leader will be responsible for establishing a dynamic organization in an emerging market that is fast-paced and driven by UnitedHealth Group's vision to promote healthcare access and affordability. S/he will collaborate with senior executives to start up Optum's Cell & Gene Therapy business, with a significant focus on setting the strategic vision, defining the core business offering and building the team to execute on it. The leader will steer a team to drive the organizational development forward and work with Optum/ UHG leadership to build the business. - This leader must be a gritty, seasoned leader with skills in setting the strategic vision, building a startup from concept to profit realization, and ultimately managing the P&L of a high-growth business in an emerging market.
This individual will be advancing and executing the strategy, providing thought leadership to the long term shape of the market overall and Optum's efforts in this space, acting as "the face" of Optum's Cell & Gene Therapy efforts to the external stakeholders, establishing priorities, building alignment, and providing direction to cross-functional teams. - This leader is also responsible for selecting and managing a robust team, particularly with experience in working with life sciences companies, provider organizations, and payers. - This person will be accountable for achieving goals for business plan milestones and financial performance objectives. S/he will ideally have a market shaping influence on the development of the Cell & Gene Therapy space system wide.

Primary Responsibilities:
Establish the Cell & Gene Therapy business plan: Validate market opportunity and strategy as currently envisioned
Create a roadmap for the business
Establish a financial case for the investment
Define a competitive, differentiated operating model and operations blueprint
Socialize the opportunity, enrolling internal executive leadership

Meet 2021-25 commitments to operationalize the business plan: Build initial team of 4-5 members through current individuals and new hires
Hit targets for adoption of the Gene Therapy Risk Protection product
Drive development, validation, and build of MVP of pharma manufacturer focused solutions
Drive development, validation and build of benefit sponsor focused solutions
Develop an operating cadence and performance management plan with measurable metrics

Ongoing responsibilities include: Foster a culture of empathy, patient-centricity, and service excellence
Build relationships with thought leaders, influencers in this market - e.g., clinicians, health systems, pharma manufacturers, consultants, technology companies, venture capital organizations, etc.
Maintain a list of potential M&A targets for the business
Contribute to forward strategy and planning for the business
Create measurement models to evaluate pilots and proof of concepts
Manage ongoing performance against established goals and measures
Collaborate with Optum Frontier Therapies to build cohesive go-to-market approaches
Work with the clinical organization and independent Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to ensure consistency with clinical policies

Key accountabilities include: Collaboration with existing Optum / UHC capabilities in Gene Therapy to ensure a cohesive business model and strategy
Achievement of adoption targets of recently launched Gene Therapy products
Overall earnings performance and growth
Capital efficiency and ROIC
Net Promoter Score results
Establishment and scaling of base operations
Continued evolution of operational practices and processes to rapidly scale the business
Management of workforce quality, experience and utilization
High employee engagement, retention and satisfaction

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
10+ years of experience developing and executing business plans and managing/leading teams within healthcare, pharma, pharmacy, PBM or health plan settings
5+ years of experience developing and executing go-to-market strategies and commercializing products or services
Knowledge of and experience in the rare / genetic disease therapy landscape
Experience working with drug supply chain and payment models (particularly for cell & gene therapies)
Experience with pharma therapy development stages and approaches (e.g., discovery, launch, supply chain, outcomes tracking, etc.)
Proven ability in navigating a complex organization, managing multiple stakeholders, and building cross-functional relationships
Experience effectively presenting ideas and tactics at executive-levels
Solid organizational, management, administrative and human relations skills, and a style which exhibits emotional maturity, leadership, collaboration and teamwork
Experience navigating to solutions balancing long term success with short-term wins
Experience building and leading high-performance teams
Experience and comfort with ambiguity
Proven strategy experience and skillset
Ability and willingness to travel up to 50%

Preferred Qualifications:
Healthcare start-up/incubator experience
Experience managing a P&L
Experience designing, building, and implement business operations
Experience in provider settings and direct patient care
Knowledge of managed care and/or benefit design (including medical stop-loss, utilization management, center of excellence networks, transplant, etc.)
Network of relationships with market constituents and industry influencers to help accelerate in-market efforts
UnitedHealth Group experience
MBA, MHA, MPH or equivalent

Colorado Residents Only: The salary/hourly range for Colorado residents is $130.300 to $250,200 -.
